KALIMA

A typographic engine for bilingual identities.

Creative technologyGenerative designSoftware
01

Context

KALIMA is an internal and client-facing tool for composing Arabic and Latin typography together in layouts, signage and motion.

02

Challenge

Bilingual layouts were assembled by hand. Designers spent hours balancing scripts with different proportions, directions and rhythms — and results varied between teams.

03

Thinking

The problem was not taste but rules. Good bilingual typography follows relationships that can be described, which means they can be computed and then refined by a designer.

04

Direction

Create a parametric engine that proposes balanced bilingual compositions in both directions, leaving the final judgement to people.

05

Making

We researched script metrics, encoded pairing and alignment rules, and built a browser-based tool with live previews and exports for print, screen and motion.

06

System

The same rule set powers static layouts, responsive web components and animated titles, so a brand reads consistently in Arabic and English everywhere.

07

Outcome

Teams using KALIMA produce first bilingual drafts in minutes instead of hours and spend their time on refinement rather than repetitive alignment.

08

Reflection

The best creative tools do not replace decisions; they remove the friction around them.
